I get this question a lot and I’m not sure their is any single answer. Some women do it for their boyfriends or husbands as gifts while others do it for themselves. Whether it is a celebration of ones body because they have achieved a goal and want to do it as a gift to themselves. Yet still I have friends that do not understand this, they see it as degrading or something that is in conflict with their religious views. Yet most erotic photography is not anymore vulgar than the murals on the ceilings of church ceilings.I don’t think anyone would call the nude murals on the ceilings of churches porn, except the extreme prudish or puritans. Is it not porn because of the context of being in a church even though the content is similar?
Now their is a difference between erotic photography and porn. Erotic photography leaves much to the imagination while porn does not. Some photographers have commented that the real difference is the poor lighting in porn, which is often the case more than not. Porn is rather repetitive in content with the same scenes just repeated with different characters. There is nothing artistic about it, just vulgar lust. While “fine art” erotic photography can achieve desire without the lust while maintaining the original mystery of the human form.
As Bill Jay once wrote, “Now here’s a shocking, outrageous, and provocative truth: many women like to be photographed naked.” From my own experience I have to agree with this statement. I have clients come in all the time and tell me they just want lingerie photos for their loved one and half way into the session they are ready to bare it all. At some level it is natural or fun to lose your inhibitions for the camera.
