Now their is a difference between erotic photography and porn. Erotic photography leaves much to the imagination while porn does not. Some photographers have commented that the real difference is the poor lighting in porn, which is often the case more than not. Porn is rather repetitive in content with the same scenes just repeated with different characters. There is nothing artistic about it, just vulgar lust. While “fine art” erotic photography can achieve desire without the lust while maintaining the original mystery of the human form.

As Bill Jay once wrote, “Now here’s a shocking, outrageous, and provocative truth: many women like to be photographed naked.”  From my own experience I have to agree with this statement. I have clients come in all the time and tell me they just want lingerie photos for their loved one and half way into the session they are ready to bare it all. At some level it is natural or fun to lose your inhibitions for the camera.

From personal experience, it really took me about 5 years to develop a good eye. Knowing what not to photograph is just as important as knowing what to. A lot of photographs exist that don’t really have much merit. A good photographer can often produce images that are important to more people than just the original client. Not every subject will have merit either. Family photos of complete strangers rarely have any importance beyond the families of those photographed. Glamour photography often has importance beyond the original client. Both men and woman can have an appreciation for the human form when it is presented in interesting ways. Animal photography often has merit. mainly because it can be anthropomorphic in nature. Often the merit is derived in seeing part of ourselves in other creatures. Creating images that a large body of people can appreciate is something that rarely exists in the amateur world of photography, unfortunately it does not exist that often in the community of professional photographers either.

This might be the best issue of the year.
